Parts of a Spiral Gasket 

Outer ring - This is known as the guiding ring because it controls the compression within the spiral gasket which holds the gasket centrally within the bolt circle.

Inner ring - This ring prevents inner buckling of the sealing element in the spiral gasket. 

Sealing element - This is the part of the spiral gasket that prevents leaking. Most spiral gaskets are made of graphite which can withstand high temperatures without breaking.
