Odessa, TX got its start in 1881 as a cow town, so to speak. It was a major point to stop for water and cattle shipping on the Texas and Pacific Railway. Over the years, the community started to develop, opening its first post office in 1885 and becoming the county seat of Ector County in 1891. In 1927, it was incorporated as a city following the discovery of oil in Ector County. Oil drew residents in, which also created plenty of jobs. The city’s population and economy have continued to grow at a rapid pace ever since.
